After that, we immediately set off for our first destination. People have different itineraries, but since Sossusvlei is one of the most iconic sites and we wanted to avoid visiting during the weekend when it is busiest, we decided to start there.

1) Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei are two of the most popular attractions in Namibia, and without a doubt, some of the sites you will enjoy the most. Sossusvlei is located in the Namib Desert, one of the world’s oldest deserts, estimated to be around 5 million years old. The sand dunes are some of the tallest in the world. The most iconic postcard view is from Deadvlei, where the petrified trees stand as silent witnesses to the desert’s ancient history.

Spending the night near Sesriem, which is close to Namib-Naukluft National Park, and visiting the park the next day is often recommended. This will allow you to start early the next day – and by early, I mean getting up at around 5 a.m to make the most of your day and avoid the heat.

The hotels closest to the National Park entrance in Sesriem seemed expensive for what they offered, especially if you book at the last minute. Therefore, most travelers usually stay in one of two nearby towns if they want to visit the park the next day: Solitaire or Hammerstein. Since we were driving from Windhoek and the distance was long, we decided to spend the night in Hammerstein, about an hour from the National Park entrance.

We stayed at We Kebi Lodge, a wonderful lodge where, with a bit of luck, you can see animals right outside your room. We were lucky, and a family of rhinos came close. The lodge itself is beautiful, with excellent facilities, including a fantastic restaurant, and they even pack your breakfast for you if you need to leave early the next morning.

Namib-Naukluft National Park

From Hammerstein to the Namib-Naukluft National Park entrance, we drove about an hour. At the entrance, they will assign a number to your vehicle, which you will need to remember to pay the park fee.

You will also need this number and your payment confirmation when exiting the park. Bring enough cash, as card payments often fail due to poor signal strength. The cost for a foreign adult is around NAD 150 per day, and the vehicle fee is NAD 50 per day.

Once inside the park, you still have to drive about another hour to reach the main dunes and Deadvlei. Keep in mind that distances even within the park are very long, so keep your car full of fuel from the beginning and bring enough snacks and water. Along the way, you’ll see spectacular landscapes and wildlife. During our visit, we saw ostriches, jackals, and various birds.

Namib-Naukluft National Park main attractions:

Dune 45 – Start the day with a sunrise hike and breakfast at the top. The most common itinerary includes climbing Dune 45 to watch the sunrise and enjoying breakfast at the top (most hotels provide a take-away breakfast for this). Keep in mind that climbing the dune can take about an hour, as it’s more tiring than it looks.

Deadvlei – Continue to Deadvlei, where you have two options: Park your car and take a hop-on, hop-off bus. Drive yourself to Deadvlei on the sand if you have a 4×4. Some people choose to deflate their tyres to make driving on sand easier. However, unless you have experience driving on sand, I don’t recommend this option. The hop-on hop-off bus is more convenient, safer, and faster, helping you avoid the risk of getting your vehicle stuck in the sand. Walk among the iconic petrified trees.

Big Daddy – Once in Deadvlei, if you decide to climb a dune, I highly recommend Big Daddy, one of the tallest dunes in the world. The climb can be challenging, but the view from the top is absolutely worth it. The best part is the descent, which is incredibly fun and spectacular as you slide down the sand.

Sesriem Canyon – A scenic stop to end the day

Dunes Elime or Big Mama – If you still have the energy, you can climb other dunes around the park.

If it’s not your first time in the desert and you’ve already experienced sand dunes in other countries, starting your day directly at Deadvlei is a good idea. Deadvlei, besides being the main attraction, offers a completely unique landscape unlike anywhere else in the world.

Important note: While mornings can be very cold, temperatures rise quickly throughout the day. If you plan to climb dunes, do it early in the morning or at sunset, as the heat of the sand can make the climb uncomfortable. Don’t forget to bring a hat and sunscreen.

2) Solitaire

After leaving Sossuvlei, we drove to Solitaire, the town we chose to rest in before continuing to our next destination the following day. True to its name, Solitaire is a lonely outpost in the middle of nowhere, but it’s an essential stop for travelers.

It’s the only gas station in the area with small shops where you can restock on fuel, water, and snacks before heading to your next major destination. We spent the night in one of the few lodges in town, Solitaire Road House.

Main attractions

McGregor’s Bakery – positioned as the best apple strudel in Namibia. While it is a must-stop and part of the experience, I found it quite average. Staying here one night before starting the tour to the main attraction, Sandwich Harbour, is also recommended.

Swakopmund is a small but vibrant coastal town, filled with shops, cafés and restaurants. If you’re looking to do some shopping or buy unique souvenirs, this is the best place to do it—avoid visiting on Sundays, as most shops are closed.

Attractions:

German Architecture – Walk around town to see colonial-era buildings that reflect the city’s strong German heritage.

The Jetty – A classic spot for ocean views, sunsets, and photos.

Desert & Adventure Activities – Sandboarding, kayaking and other activities are popular here.

Cafés & Restaurants – Swakopmund is one of the best places in Namibia for dining, with excellent bakeries and seafood restaurants. This area is ideal for rock climbers and hikers, as you can spend the whole day scaling rocks and admiring the natural scenery.

To enter Spitzkoppe, you need to pay the park entrance fee, and you will receive a map, after which you’re free to explore the area by car. We didn’t stay overnight here, as accommodation options are limited, but we spent the entire day exploring before heading to Uis for the night.

Attractions:

The Rock Arch – The arch is a giant natural granite formation,

Bushman Rock Art – You will find cave paintings created by the Bushmen, dating back over 2,000 years. These artworks depict animals and human figures, often illustrating hunting scenes.

Rock Climbing Routes – Over 300 climbing routes for beginners and advanced climbers. Uis is a small mining town and a common stop for travelers, offering a place to rest before heading further into the desert or back to Etosha National Park.

While there aren’t many major attractions, we stayed at Green Elephant Cottage, which was comfortable. There are also a few cafés in town if you want a bite to eat, including Cactus Café, which is also a hotel.

7) Vingerklip

Vingerklip, also known as the Rock Finger, is a striking natural rock formation in Damaraland and a popular stop on Namibian road trips. We didn’t stop to explore it up close, but we enjoyed its panoramic view as we drove toward Ugab Game Farm Lodge.

This stop was mainly to rest and recover before heading to Etosha National Park, as we were excited to experience life on a Namibian farm. Here, they organize a variety of tours, including small safaris around the farm, nature drives, rock art excursions, and guided nature walks. You can also enjoy wildlife viewing, where we were lucky to see rhinos, giraffes, and other animals up close.

8) Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is Namibia’s most famous wildlife destination and a must-visit for anyone seeking a safari. It is home to a spectacular variety of African wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and countless antelope species.

Most travelers use Outjo as a base for visiting Etosha. While there are accommodation options inside the park, they are usually limited and more expensive. Some lodges in Outjo:

Safari Camp

Kifaru Bush Camp

Ombinda Country Lodge

Sophienhof Lodge

To enter Etosha National Park, you need to bring your passport and sign a permit agreeing to the park rules, such as no food, no plastic bags, no weapons, etc.

The entry fee per adult (foreign) is NAD 150-00 per day. Vehicles with 10 seats or fewer are NAD 50-00 per vehicle per day. Opening and closing times change weekly and are based on sunrise and sunset. Etosha National Park is accessible through four gates:

Anderson’s Gate – South

Von Lindequist Gate – East

Galton Gate – Southwest

King Nehale Lya Mpingana Gate – North

You can access Etosha National Park either with a tour or using your own vehicle. The park is famous for its self-drive safari experience, which lets you explore at your own pace. If you choose to self-drive, it’s best to download an offline map, as the signal is very limited inside the park. Following other safari vehicles is also recommended, since they are experienced at spotting wildlife and can greatly increase your chances of seeing animals.

How many days you spend in the park really depends on how much time you enjoy observing wildlife from your car. For us, one full day was enough, but itineraries can range from 2 to 3 days and cover different sections of the park.

9) Cheetah Conservation Center in Otjiwarongo

If time allows, another popular attraction is the Cheetah Conservation Center in Otjiwarongo. Although it’s a bit of a detour, some travelers choose to visit. Namibia has the largest cheetah population in the world, and the conservation efforts here are remarkable. The entrance fees go directly to supporting the center’s important work in protecting cheetahs.

The center offers a variety of experiences, including watching cheetahs run, guided walks, safaris, and educational talks. One suggestion, regardless of which tour you choose, is to be there at 2:00 PM, when the cheetahs are fed. This is an additional activity where the caretakers explain their diet and care, and you get to watch up close as the cheetahs are fed.

10) Windhoek

Windhoek, the capital of Namibia—whose name means “corner of the wind”—is the main point of arrival and departure for most travelers. We saved it for the last day of our trip, and one day is more than enough to see the main attractions, such as:

Christuskirche – the iconic church

Namibia National Museum – for a glimpse into the country’s history

Independence Memorial Museum

One of the most popular restaurants in the capital, Stellenbosch, offers a variety of regional dishes. Its main attraction is its selection of South African wines, which is not surprising given Namibia’s proximity to the country.

How To Get To Namibia

There are several ways to enter Namibia, with the most common gateway being Hosea Kutako International Airport, located in Windhoek, the country’s capital.

From Europe, the most popular routes are via Frankfurt or Munich, where Lufthansa and Discover Airlines offer direct flights to Windhoek. Other options include connecting through Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines or via Johannesburg with South African Airways. Flights with layovers tend to be more economical.

To enter Namibia, travelers from most countries can obtain a visa on arrival. However, is better to apply online before your trip to avoid long immigration lines upon arrival. The process is straightforward and can be completed through the official website. All you’ll need is a hotel reservation and proof of return travel.

Internet Connection in Namibia

Mobile coverage outside major cities can be somewhat limited, but the easiest way to stay connected is by purchasing a local SIM card. MTC is Namibia’s main mobile network provider.

You can purchase a physical SIM card at the MTC Kiosk in the arrivals hall of Hosea Kutako International Airport or at MTC stores in Windhoek. At the airport, you can choose a package based on how many days you’ll be in the country. A valid passport is required to purchase a SIM card.

How To Get Around Namibia

Namibia is a big country, so traveling from one place to another usually takes at least a few hours by car. The best way to explore Namibia is to rent your own vehicle, which lets you travel at your own pace and follow your own itinerary.

You can rent a car directly at the airport, but there are many car rental options across the country, such as Caprivi Car Rental (+264 81 162 5791) and Gondwana Car Rental (+264 81 129 2424).

Important tips for renting a car in Namibia

In Namibia, you must drive on the left-hand side of the road.

Choose a 4×4 vehicle for safety, as many roads are unpaved and may include sand or rough terrain.

If you plan to drive on sandy areas or desert dunes, you must lower your tire pressure. However, unless you have previous experience driving on sand, it is safer not to take the risk.

By law, headlights must be kept on at all times

An international driving license is required. A license from your home country alone is not sufficient. Most rental companies may allow you to rent a car using only your home-country license, but if you are stopped by the traffic police, they will require the international license.

Although roads are generally in good condition, avoid driving at night since most roads are unlit.

Plan long trips carefully, keeping fuel, water and snacks on hand, as services can be sparse in remote areas. Distances are very long and you can drive 5 to 6 hours without seeing another car or even another person.

Download maps in advance, as you will often be out of cellular coverage, and carry an emergency first-aid kit with you.

Carry cash for emergencies, especially when driving long distances where you might not find any services along the way.

Traveling independently without a vehicle is not recommended, as public transportation is almost nonexistent outside the main cities. Distances between attractions are long, and you would likely spend a lot of time waiting between locations. Another option to explore Namibia is booking a tour. This is convenient because the tour organizers handle transportation and itinerary planning. The downside is that it can be more expensive.

Currency in Namibia

The official currency of Namibia is the Namibian dollar (NAD), which currently equals 1 USD = 16.5 NAD. However, the South African rand (ZAR) is also accepted, as it is pegged 1:1 with the Namibian dollar. So don’t be surprised if you receive South African money as change.

Interestingly, most places do not accept cash payments in US dollars or euros, so make sure to either exchange money at the airport or withdraw local currency from an ATM in major cities such as Windhoek or Swakopmund.

Even though most businesses, including gas stations, restaurants and hotels, accept and even prefer card payments, tips are generally better received in cash. Always carry cash for emergencies, especially when driving long distances, as you might not find any services along the way.

Safety and Security in Namibia

Namibia is one of the most stable countries in Southern Africa and is very accustomed to tourism. However, as with any tourist destination, it is important to stay alert, especially in larger cities. Some important recommendations include: avoid carrying too much cash while walking around, take care of your belongings, exercise caution while driving and avoid driving at night.

Weather in Namibia

Namibia is known for its clear skies. Its extremely arid climate means there is very little humidity, resulting in few clouds. This makes Namibia a popular destination for astronomy and stargazing, as its clear skies allow for incredible views.

However, sunny days can be very intense, so it’s important to protect yourself with sunscreen, a hat, and appropriate clothing. While daytime temperatures can get very hot, nights, especially in the desert, often become quite cool. For this reason, it is recommended to pack appropriate clothing for both hot days and cold nights.

The best time to visit the country is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This period corresponds to winter, since Namibia is in the Southern Hemisphere, with cooler temperatures and clear skies, making it easier to drive on the roads and increasing your chances of spotting wildlife.

Namibia Ultimate Guide Wrap Up

I hope this Namibia guide helps you plan an unforgettable trip to this beautiful area.
