I literally booked this rental on Airbnb the day before our trip, and it was an amazing spot! We were three girls on our own and the complex felt very safe. The condo was spotlessly clean and spacious and I loved the cute thatched terrace overlooking the pool.

I also loved the location. This charming complex is right on the beach, a short walk to town and the surf break. They also had a surfboard and boogie boards for guests to use at the condo, which was a nice touch. Although the town is small, there’s still a lot to explore and enjoy during your stay. Although, the highlight of any visit to Sayulita is to simply relax!

Here are 12 must-do activities in Sayulita.

1) Explore The Town

Sayulita earned the title of Pueblo Mágico, or “Magic Town,” from the Tourism Board of Mexico for a very good reason – it’s truly one of the most charming small towns in the country.

When you arrive in Sayulita, make sure to stop by the town square to get a feel for the area. It may be small, but it’s filled with delightful features, including murals, street art, and crafts around every corner. Don’t be afraid to wander off the main roads; you’ll uncover hidden gems and charming shops waiting to be discovered.

2) Take a Boat Tour to the Hidden Beach in Marietas Islands National Park

If you’re searching for the ultimate bucket list experience in Sayulita, this hidden beach is a must-visit. It offers a breathtaking view that feels like a scene from a movie, and visitors must swim through a cave to reach it.

The Marietas Islands are part of a national wildlife and marine reserve, providing a fantastic opportunity to see a variety of birds and marine life. Because this secret beach is located within a National Park and has a limited number of daily visitors, you will need to book a tour to access it.

3) Watch the Sunset from Carricitos Beach

Carricitos Beach is considered one of the most stunning beaches in Sayulita and the ideal location to catch the sunset because it faces west. The sight of waves crashing against the large boulders and the distant views of Monkey Mountain create a truly breathtaking scene.

Carricitos Beach is also known for its tranquility, as it remains largely undiscovered by tourists. Its secluded setting gives it a local feel, making it an excellent spot for relaxation without the distractions of souvenir vendors or crowded umbrellas.

4) Go on a Zip Line Adventure

Enjoy the thrill of gliding above the treetops on 10 zip lines and a suspended bridge nestled in the mountains. Marvel at the stunning vistas of the ocean and rainforest, making this one of the most breathtaking canopy tours around Puerto Vallarta.

5) Take Surf Lessons

Sayulita is well-known for its laid-back surf culture, with waves that are perfect for beginners. As a result, numerous novice surfers are drawn to Sayulita to master the fundamentals with lots of surf lessons and surf schools available.

If you’ve surfed before, you can rent a surfboard at any of surf shacks near the surf break, which is directly in front of old town. Or if you stay at the Las Olas Airbnb I stayed at, they provide 7 foot foam surfboard that will be on your balcony waiting for you, which is the perfect size for catching small to medium waves.

6) Hike Monkey Mountain

If you’re seeking an adventure and want to take in some of the most stunning views in Sayulita, hiking Monkey Mountain (Cerro del Mono) is a must. This hike is the toughest in the area, with a round trip of just over four miles.

It can be pretty demanding, particularly if you’re not used to hiking in hot and humid conditions. However, once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with incredible panoramic views of the town and the surrounding jungle.

Be aware that during the rainy season (from June to October), the trail may be closed due to heavy rains and high temperatures.

7) Explore Sayulita Nightlife

As the sun sets in Sayulita, surfers come out to party. If you stay for a while, you’ll likely notice the same familiar faces at the local spots. I’ve rounded up all the best bars to check out in Sayulita below in the bar section.

I suggest starting your night at Escondido Bar, which has the best cocktails in town, and then heading out from there. Whatever you feel like getting up to in the evening hours, there is no shortage of watering holes and partying to experience in Sayulita.

8) Spend the day at Playa de Los Muertos

Playa de Los Muertos, one of the most popular beaches in Sayulita, is a must-visit for anyone eager to soak in the beauty of the area’s coastline in a more tranquil setting. Despite its name translating to “Beach of the Dead,” due to its proximity to a cemetery, this vibrant stretch of sand offers a lively atmosphere.

The beach is renowned for its breathtaking rock formations that enhance the dramatic landscape, making it an excellent spot for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking.

9) Take a Day Trip to San Pancho

San Pancho, or San Francisco, is a delightful and relaxed coastal town located only 15 minutes north of Sayulita. Many locals believe it represents what Sayulita was like before it became crowded with tourists.

A day trip to San Pancho is a fantastic way to get away from the hustle and bustle of Sayulita and experience a more tranquil and genuine side of the Riviera Nayarit. One of the highlights of visiting San Pancho is its beautiful beaches.

The main beach is a lovely crescent-shaped stretch of white sand, ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing, with rental options for surfers available.

10) Go on a Sailing Adventure

Witness a stunning sunset from the water aboard a luxury catamaran, accompanied by a professional crew. Enjoy the magnificent coastal views while you unwind with a drink and savory hors d’oeuvres as you glide through the Bay of Banderas.

11) Eat Amazing Mexican Food

You can’t go to Mexico and not enjoy amazing Mexican food and Sayulita has no shortage of great food. We had some amazing meals during our 5 days in Sayulita but my favorite, by far, was Mary’s.

Mary’s tacos are outstanding and their produce is very fresh. The also have great salsa and excellent mole. And my friend’s daughter, who is 13, loved the bean and cheese burritos so much she ate two of them!

One thing to note, they do not accept credit cards so be sure to bring cash, or you’ll be washing dishes to pay for your meal.

12) Get A Massage On The Beach

If you head to Sayulita Beach which is the main beach, just in front of downtown, there are tons of umbrellas lined up along the beach that you can rent for the day. We paid 300 pesos for one umbrella and three chairs for the entire day.

One thing to note – they only accept cash for the beach chairs. You can pay in USD but they prefer pesos and will give you a bad exchange rate if you pay in USD so bring pesos.

Once you sit down you’ll be bombard with locals selling every type of souvenir imaginable. You’ll also be offered massages. I got a massage every day sitting in my chair drinking a beer and watching people surf. It was glorious.

Expect to pay about 30 USD for a one hour massage. You can usually pay by credit card but it’s kind of an ordeal as they much prefer if you pay in cash. When you leave the airport, you can easily take an official taxi or use Uber, which are both reliable and budget-friendly.

If you stay at Las Olas the wonderful concierge team can set up a car service for you. We opted for this option. It was about 200 USD round trip but was well worth it. The driver meets you at the airport with water and cold beer and stops at a grocery store along the way at no extra charge.

Given Sayulita’s small size, you won’t need a car once you arrive. You can walk to even the most remote beaches in under an hour. However, golf carts are popular, especially for those staying in elevated areas. You can rent them from several agencies throughout the town.

Currency & Cash

Sayulita is old school when it comes to credit cards. A lot of places take credit cards but some places, including some of the best restaurants in town, do not. Also most of the beach bars and surf rental huts on the beach only accept cash.

So, I suggest bringing cash and exchanging it for pesos upon arrival. Most places will accept USD but they often rip you off on the exchange rate. Also, we were low on cash during our trips and all of the ATMs in town ran out of money.

This was a bummer because our favorite restaurant (Mary’s), only accepts cash so we couldn’t eat there again when we ran out. So plan ahead and have plenty of cash when staying in Sayulita. Some of the best restaurants in town are very affordable (by LA pricing standards), but expect to pay $10-15 for cocktails and $10-20 for entrees, depending on where you eat.

Best Time To Visit Sayulita, Mexico

December and January are the peak months for visitors to Sayulita, as travelers from around the world flock here to escape the cold winter. During this time, the weather is at its best with average temperatures in the mid 80s and lower humidity.

Another excellent time to visit is in March or April. Although weekends tend to be quite busy, this period remains ideal for a visit before the intense heat of summer sets in. By April, it is warm but not excessively hot.

Mexico experiences its hottest and rainiest season from July to September, making this the quietest time of year in Sayulita. We visited in July. It was very hot but we still had a great time!

In October, the weather begins to cool down slightly as the holiday season kicks off, starting with Día de los Muertos at the end of the month. November is also an ideal time to visit Sayulita, as the weather is great, and it’s a calm period leading up to the high season.

Sayulita, Mexico Guide Wrap Up

I hope you’ve found my guide to Sayulita helpful!
