From hidden waterfalls tucked away in the jungle to mouthwatering local delicacies in hole-in-the-wall eateries, I’m excited to share my insider’s guide to this incredible island. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning traveller, this guide will help you experience Cebu like a local.<\/p>\n

Consider staying in different parts of the island rather than basing yourself in one spot. The north, south, and central areas each offer unique experiences.<\/p>\n

If you are looking for a more affordable high-end rental or somewhere where all your girls can relax together on a trip to Cebu Island<\/span><\/p>\n Here are ten top-rated luxury villas that are less pricey but still have all the required amenities for an incredible stay:<\/span><\/p>\n Cebu’s coastline is dotted with some of the most spectacular beaches in the Philippines, but the real gems are often overlooked by most tourists.<\/p>\n In the north, Bantayan Island’s Paradise Beach lives up to its name with powdery white sand and crystal-clear waters that remain relatively uncrowded even during peak season. The best time to visit is during sunrise when it’s cooler, quieter and undeniably beautiful.<\/p>\n A true hidden gem is Hermit’s Cove, tucked away in the municipality of Aloguinsan. This small, picturesque beach is best visited on weekdays, as it tends to get busy during weekends and holidays. The crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs make it perfect for swimming and snorkelling (and if you are lucky, spotting turtles)<\/p>\n The popular tourist town of Moalboal hosts several stunning beaches worth exploring. Lambug Beach offers a long stretch of white sand perfect for sunset walks, while White Beach provides a more local atmosphere. Panagsama Beach, while not the most beautiful in terms of sand, offers an incredible opportunity to snorkel with thousands of sardines just meters from shore \u2013 an experience that rivals many paid tours.<\/p>\n Pack some dried mangoes from the local market for a perfect beach picnic. While the best prices are found at Carbon Market in Cebu City, remember that haggling is part of the culture, and initial prices are often higher for tourists. Don’t be afraid to negotiate \u2013 it’s expected!<\/p>\n I can confidently say that the island’s diving spots rival some of the world’s best. Moalboal’s famous sardine run is just the beginning of what Cebu has to offer ocean enthusiasts. Even if you’re not a certified diver, snorkelling with the sardine ball is equally impressive (and much more budget-friendly) \u2013 imagine swimming alongside millions of glimmering sliver fish just meters from the shore. It is worth the trip to Cebu just for this experience!<\/p>\n For a truly spectacular diving experience, head north to Malapascua Island, where you can dive with thresher sharks year-round.<\/p>\n The early morning dives at Monad Shoal are worth the 4 AM wake-up call to witness these elegant creatures in their natural habitat. Don’t miss Gato Island, an underwater cave system home to white-tip reef sharks and, for the observant divers, even pygmy seahorses hiding in the sea fans!<\/p>\n Additional diving spots are scattered around Mactan Island, offering convenient day trips for those short on time. These sites feature beautiful coral gardens and abundant marine life, perfect for beginners.<\/p>\n Book your dives directly with local dive shops in advance during weekdays \u2013 you’ll often get better rates and quieter dives.<\/p>\n Cebu’s mountainous centre offers countless hiking opportunities that most visitors never discover. Casino Peak in Dalaguete provides a 360-degree view of the southern Cebu mountains and coastline. The best part? The hike takes only 30 minutes, making it perfect for sunrise missions.<\/p>\n No trip to Cebu is complete without conquering Osme\u00f1a Peak, the island’s highest point. While it’s become increasingly popular in recent years, timing your visit for sunrise or sunset still offers a magical experience. The jagged peaks provide a stunning backdrop for photos, and on clear days, you can see both the eastern and western coastlines.<\/p>\n For more adventurous hikers, Mount Manunggal in Balamban offers one of the best camping experiences on the island. The trail leads you through diverse terrain before reaching the summit, where panoramic views of the island await. Camping here offers the rare opportunity to witness the sunrise and sunset from the same spot \u2013 a truly remarkable experience. The mountain also holds historical significance as the site of President Ramon Magsaysay’s plane crash in 1957.<\/p>\n While Kawasan Falls<\/a> might be the poster child of Cebu’s waterfalls<\/a>, the island houses dozens of equally stunning cascades that see far fewer visitors. Dao Falls in Samboan requires a bit of effort to reach, but the 40-minute hike through the jungle and azure streams leads to a magnificent 90-meter waterfall with a deep, turquoise pool perfect for swimming.<\/p>\n In the municipality of Alegria, Cambais Falls offers a three-tiered wonderland of crystal-clear pools. The middle tier is the best spot for cliff jumping, with heights ranging from three to eight meters. Visit on weekday mornings to have the place almost to yourself.<\/p>\n Hidden in the mountains of Barili, Mantayupan Falls is Cebu’s tallest waterfall at 98 meters. The two-tier falls offer different experiences \u2013 the lower falls are perfect for relaxing, while the upper falls provide a more serene atmosphere for swimming.<\/p>\n Many of these falls are accessible via habal-habal (motorcycle taxi), but arrange your return trip in advance as the phone signal can be spotty in these areas. To grant yourself more flexibility, rent a motorcycle from one of the nearby towns. Also, try to visit first thing in the morning and on a weekday for a more peaceful experience.<\/p>\n The highlight of Cebu’s adventure activities has to be canyoneering in Badian. This 3-4 hour journey takes you through a stunning canyon, where you’ll jump from cliffs (ranging from 3-15 meters), swim through turquoise waters, and scramble over rocks before ending at the famous Kawasan Falls.<\/p>\n While it might look intimidating, multiple jump points offer different heights for varying comfort levels, and guides are experts at helping even nervous participants navigate the course safely.<\/p>\n The first jump is usually the most nerve-wracking, but you’ll likely be seeking out the highest points by the end. The crystal-clear waters below make every jump Instagram-worthy! It is best to book through a reputable company and bring a waterproof camera.<\/p>\n Cebu’s culinary scene is a journey of discovery through BBQ stands, carinderias (local eateries), and street food stalls. These budget-friendly options offer the most authentic flavours and provide a genuine glimpse into local life.<\/p>\n For the adventurous eater, Cebu offers some unique delicacies. Try tuslob buwa, a bubbling gravy-like mixture of pig brain and spices that you dip hanging rice into \u2013 it’s tastier than it sounds! For the truly brave, there’s balut (fertilized duck egg), a Filipino delicacy not for the faint-hearted. Chicken feet, locally known as “adidas,” are a popular snack found at most BBQ stands.<\/p>\n Some of the must-try local dishes include siomai (Cebu’s take on Chinese dumplings), chicken adobo (the unofficial national dish), and bicol express (a spicy coconut-based dish that originated in Bicol but has found a special place in Cebuano hearts).<\/p>\n For those seeking a more upscale experience, head to Busay for restaurants with spectacular city views. 21-kilometre Coffee offers great brews and panoramic vistas that make the journey worthwhile.<\/p>\n Don’t forget dessert! Try pan de coco fresh from local bakeries, “dirty” ice cream from street vendors (don’t worry \u2013 it’s called dirty because it’s street-side, not because it’s unclean), or mango float, a local take on refrigerator cake. Halo-halo, while beloved by Filipinos, might surprise you with its unique combination of ingredients, including sweet beans, sweetcorn, jellies, fruit, and ube ice cream!<\/p>\n The islands surrounding Cebu each have their own character and charm. Choose to visit early in the morning and stay the whole day, or if you have time, spend a few nights on each of Cebu’s islands.<\/p>\n Bantayan Island in the north is a popular beach break from Cebu City. Known for its powdery white sand beaches, the island maintains a laid-back atmosphere that’s increasingly rare in more developed beach destinations.<\/p>\n Kota Beach and Paradise Beach offer postcard-perfect views, though don’t overlook Sugar Beach for the best sunsets. The island comes alive during Holy Week, but it’s best to visit in the off-season when you can rent a motorbike and explore.<\/p>\n Stay in Santa Fe for the best balance of convenience and beach access, and don’t miss the fresh seafood at the local market \u2013 the prices here are a fraction of what you’ll pay in Cebu City.<\/p>\n Malapascua Island, famous for its thresher shark diving, offers much more than underwater adventures. The island’s Bounty Beach rivals any in the Philippines, with its white sand and crystal-clear waters.<\/p>\n Unlike more developed islands, Malapascua still maintains a small island charm \u2013 there are no cars, and you can walk around the island in a few hours. Beyond diving, don’t miss the sunset at the lighthouse, and take a boat trip to Kalanggaman Island’s famous sandbar.<\/p>\n The best time to visit is between December and May when the seas are calmer and visibility for diving is optimal.<\/p>\n The Camotes Islands are another epic spot to spend a couple of nights, exploring its famous beaches and caves. Santiago Bay’s long stretch of white sand is perfect for lazy beach days, while Lake Danao provides opportunities for kayaking and picnics.<\/p>\n Don’t miss the Buho Rock cliff diving spot \u2013 even if you’re not brave enough to jump, it’s a spectacular spot for photos. The Hidden Beach (which isn’t so hidden anymore but still beautiful) and the Paraiso Cave and Resort are must-visits.<\/p>\n What makes Camotes special is its affordability compared to other island destinations \u2013 you can still find beachfront accommodations at reasonable prices.<\/p>\n For shorter trips, the islands around Mactan offer excellent day trip options. The Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a haven for bird watchers, especially during the migration season between September and March. Nalusuan and Hilutungan Marine Sanctuaries provide fantastic snorkelling opportunities just a short boat ride from Mactan.<\/p>\n Beyond the modern malls, Cebu’s shopping scene includes local markets and artisan shops. Carbon Market remains the best place for local goods, but don’t miss the weekend Sugbo Mercado for local food and crafts in a more organised setting.<\/p>\n Download the Grab app for city travel, but for intercity trips, use the yellow Ceres buses for a more budget-friendly experience.<\/p>\n Time your visit with local festivals like Sinulog (January)<\/p>\n Bring suncream from your home country, as Filipino suncream is often expensive, has poorer quality, and frequently contains whitening products.<\/p>\n The best time to visit is from December to May, during the dry season, when temperatures range from 30 to 34 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n The wet season is between May and December; however, the wettest months are between June and November. If you’re visiting during the rainy season, prepare for potential typhoons and heavy downpours.
