In September I went on a girls&#8217; wellness getaway in Switzerland where we spent eight blissful days hiking through the breathtaking Bernese Alps.<\/p>\n<p>The Bernese Alps are a mountain range of the alps made up of three peaks (Eiger, M\u00f6nch, and Jungfrau), located in Western Switzerland, in the canton of Bern. This area of Switzerland offers excellent skiing in the winter and incredible hiking in the summer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you want to plan a Swiss Alps hiking trip, this guide has everything you need to know to make it an unforgettable experience!<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Swiss Alps Hiking Trip 2021\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YL32kZbrSz0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Where To Stay In Switzerland<\/h2>\n<p>The Bernese Alps are stunning and very accessible, making them an ideal destination for a Switzerland hiking trip. We chose the small village of Wengen (population 1,300), as our home base here for the duration of our getaway. Wengen is a car-free mountain town in the Interlaken area, situated at the heart of summer hiking, sightseeing, and outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<p>In winter, Wengen transforms into a world-class ski resort renowned for hosting the Lauberhorn World Cup Alpine ski races and boasts excellent skiing terrain suitable for all abilities. The picturesque town of Wengen exudes Swiss mountain charm, offering an array of great hiking trails, as well as fantastic restaurants and upscale accommodations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We rented our chalet from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wengenapartments.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wengen Apartments<\/a> and could not be more pleased with our accommodations. Julie Doyle, the owner, is excellent and quickly responded to our requests and questions.<\/p>\n<p>We stayed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wengenapartments.com\/rentals\/apartment-wengen-chalet-bargsunna-penthouse-307759.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chalet B\u00e4rgsunna Penthouse<\/a>, which sits on a hillside overlooking Wengen, just a short walk from the Wengen\u2013M\u00e4nnlichen aerial cableway. This penthouse offered the perfect blend of chic alpine decor and modern amenities, making it an excellent home base for our hiking getaway.<\/p>\n<p>We loved the loft, where we could practice morning yoga and watch movies in the evenings. I flew Swiss Air direct from Los Angeles to Zurich. From Zurich, it is a two-hour (beautiful!) drive to Lauterbrunnen.&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Wengen is a car-free town, so when you arrive in Lauterbrunnen, you can leave your car there at the multi-level parking garage at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungfrau.ch\/en-gb\/arrival-at-station-car-parks\/lauterbrunnen-railway-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lauterbrunnen Railway Station<\/a>.<\/span>&nbsp;Parking is about $20 per day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then you take the train up the mountain to Wengen. It&#8217;s a quick ride that takes less than twenty minutes, and the cost is approximately $8 for a one-way ticket. The train stops briefly at Wengwald on the way up and then the next stop is Wengen.<\/p>\n<p>The train runs back and forth from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen every thirty minutes, making it very easy to get back and forth to your car if you decide to drive to a different area. From Wengen, you can access a multitude of hikes, and you can take the train and cable cars all around the area, so you won&#8217;t need your vehicle often. Currently, the Swiss Franc is stronger than the US Dollar (1 Swiss Franc = 1.09 US Dollar), but I suggest checking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xe.com\/currencyconverter\/convert\/?Amount=1&amp;From=CHF&amp;To=USD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">currency converter<\/a>&nbsp;for current rates when you are planning your trip.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">Switzerland is not cheap. Food and transport are <strong>expensive<\/strong>. I was especially surprised by how expensive the cable car tickets were, so keep this in mind when you are budgeting. Some of the small chalets along the hiking trails only accept <strong>cash<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">The voltage in Switzerland is 230V\/50 H,z which is the same as most of Europe. Switzerland uses <b>type C (2-pin) and Type J (3-pin) plugs,&nbsp;<\/b>but most power sockets are designed for three-pin round plugs.<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">A lot of the trails that I am sharing here in my Switzerland hiking trip guide take at least a few hours and some take a half-day or longer. If you&#8217;re planning to do a proper hiking trip in the Swiss Alps, you will need a&nbsp;<strong>backpack<\/strong>&nbsp;to carry&nbsp;<strong>layers<\/strong>, sunscreen, and snacks, as well as a&nbsp;<strong>water bladder<\/strong> to stay hydrated.<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-hveid=\"CBoQAQ\" data-ved=\"2ahUKEwiBkMuk5tnzAhVYs54KHXKMBA8Quk56BAgaEAE\">You&#8217;ll also need hiking boots to prevent slipping when climbing rocky terrain or rolling an ankle. Below is the exact itinerary we used for our eight-day hiking trip in Switzerland, which I must say was by far my favorite trip I have ever taken!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have been travel blogging for 10 years and have visited almost 60 countries, so this is a significant claim, but the Bernese Alps stole my heart, and I plan to return for many more hiking (and skiing) trips in Wengen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56017 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland.jpg\" alt=\"Wengen, Switzerland\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-780x585.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-853x640.jpg 853w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 1: Wengen &#8211; M\u00e4nnlichen Trail<\/h3>\n<p>On our first day in Switzerland, we went on a jog to explore Wengen, had a delicious buffet breakfast (with lots of cheese!) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdoqocy.com\/click-8449023-11552045?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2FLauterbrunnen-Hotels-Sunstar-Hotel-Wengen.h1943015.Hotel-Information%3Fchkin%3D2021-11-03%26chkout%3D2021-11-04%26x_pwa%3D1%26rfrr%3DHSR%26pwa_ts%3D1634767567018%26referrerUrl%3DaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZXhwZWRpYS5jb20vSG90ZWwtU2VhcmNo%26useRewards%3Dfalse%26rm1%3Da2%26regionId%3D6046756%26destination%3DLauterbrunnen%252C%2BCanton%2Bof%2BBern%252C%2BSwitzerland%26destType%3DMARKET%26selected%3D1943015%26sort%3DRECOMMENDED%26semdtl%3D%26userIntent%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sunstar Hotel Wengen<\/a>, went grocery shopping, and then returned to our chalet to get ready for our hike up to M\u00e4nnlichen. (The trailhead for this hike is literally right out the back door of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wengenapartments.com\/rentals\/apartment-wengen-chalet-bargsunna-penthouse-307759.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chalet B\u00e4rgsunna Penthouse<\/a>&nbsp;so it could not have been more convenient).<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e4nnlichen is a 7,687-foot mountain in the Swiss Alps. The town of Wengen is situated at the base of M\u00e4nnlichen, and its peak can be reached from Wengen by the Wengen\u2013M\u00e4nnlichen aerial cable car or from the Grindelwald Terminal station via the Grindelwald\u2013M\u00e4nnlichen gondola cableway.<\/p>\n<p>Or you can hike from Wengen to M\u00e4nnlichen, which is what we did since this was a hiking trip, after all. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/wengen-mannlichen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wengen to M\u00e4nnlichen trail<\/a> is a 3.6-mile, lightly trafficked, point-to-point hike with a 3,441ft elevation gain. It took us about 2.5 hours.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This hike is rated as moderate, but it should&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">be rated as&nbsp;<strong>difficult instead<\/strong><\/span>. This was by far the most challenging hike we did during our trip, not because it was long or technical, but because you are literally hiking straight up a ski hill with an intense elevation gain.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch my Instagram stories <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stories\/highlights\/17928415705758459\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@VanessaRivers<\/a>, where I share our experience climbing this trail, which was challenging but very rewarding. Luckily, there are a couple of restaurants at the top where you can get food, rest, get warm (if the weather is chilly), and enjoy a much-earned beer before you take the cable car back down to Wengen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TIP:<\/strong> The last cable car from M\u00e4nnlichen to Wengen is around 5pm so plan your hike accordingly otherwise you will be walking back down the mountain. Also, bring a power bar with you for this hike. The altitude makes you feel weak, so it is helpful to refuel halfway, with some carbs and protein.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For dinner,<\/strong>&nbsp;we went out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tkqlhce.com\/click-8449023-11552045?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2FLauterbrunnen-Hotels-Maya-Caprice-Boutique-Hotel-Spa.h991560.Hotel-Information%3Fchkin%3D2022-02-07%26chkout%3D2022-02-10%26x_pwa%3D1%26rfrr%3DHSR%26pwa_ts%3D1634768383303%26referrerUrl%3DaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZXhwZWRpYS5jb20vSG90ZWwtU2VhcmNo%26useRewards%3Dfalse%26rm1%3Da2%26regionId%3D6186871%26destination%3DWengen%252C%2BLauterbrunnen%252C%2BCanton%2Bof%2BBern%252C%2BSwitzerland%26destType%3DMARKET%26sort%3DRECOMMENDED%26top_dp%3D272%26top_cur%3DUSD%26semdtl%3D%26userIntent%3D%26selectedRoomType%3D200404916%26selectedRatePlan%3D211688562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maya Caprice Boutique Hotel<\/a>, an upscale restaurant with white tablecloths, offering great vegetarian options and an amazing view of the Swiss Alps. I had their pumpkin squash soup and a (giant) vegetable salad with mountain cheese. Both were delicious.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56016 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/maya-caprice-hotel-wengen.jpg\" alt=\"Maya Caprice Hotel, Wengen\" width=\"1033\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/maya-caprice-hotel-wengen.jpg 1033w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/maya-caprice-hotel-wengen-780x967.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/maya-caprice-hotel-wengen-150x186.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1033px) 100vw, 1033px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 2: M\u00fcrren &#8211; Gimmelwald Trail &amp; The&nbsp;M\u00fcrren Flower Trail<\/h3>\n<p>After our intense first day hike, we wanted to have a mellow hiking day, so we decided to take a day trip to explore the nearby town of M\u00fcrren. From Wengen, you take the train down to Lauterbrunnen, then take the cable car to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungfrau.ch\/en-gb\/arrival-at-station-car-parks\/muerren-railway-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gr\u00fctschalp Railway Station<\/a>. From there, you take another train up to the small mountain village of M\u00fcrren (population 450), which costs approximately&nbsp;$20 each way.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00fcrren is incredible! The town is so cute and the landscape around&nbsp;M\u00fcrren is breathtaking. It was the most picturesque area we visited in Switzerland and possibly the most charming place I have seen on all my travels.<\/p>\n<p>I think Wengen is a better place to stay for a hiking trip, purely from an accessibility standpoint, but if you don&#8217;t mind the trek, spending a few nights in M\u00fcrren would be idyllic. If you don&#8217;t stay in M\u00fcrren, I suggest taking at least a full-day trip here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56046 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-switzerland.jpg\" alt=\"M\u00fcrren, Switzerland\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-switzerland.jpg 960w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-switzerland-780x1040.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-switzerland-640x853.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-switzerland-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We arrived in M\u00fcrren in the late morning and had breakfast at Cafe Liv, which has excellent coffee and yummy vegan pastries. Then we&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">began our hike from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/murren-to-gimmelwald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">M\u00fcrren<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/murren-to-gimmelwald\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&nbsp;to Gimmelwald<\/a>. I put hike in parentheses because this trail is more of a walk than an actual hike.<\/p>\n<p>The trail from M\u00fcrren to Gimmelwald is a 1.7-mile (mostly downhill) point-to-point trail that is accurately rated as <strong>easy<\/strong>. But even though this trail is easy, it was still one of my favorite hikes. This walk is truly breathtakingly beautiful. It was hard not to stop every few seconds to take yet another photo.<\/p>\n<p>During our walk, we passed through the small village of M\u00fcrren, dotted with flower gardens, cute wooden homes, and boutique hotels with colorful shutters, cows and sheep grazing against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, flower fields, paragliders soaring through the air, meadows, hillsides dotted with chalets and so much green in every direction.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56047 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike.jpg\" alt=\"M\u00fcrren to Gimmelwald Hike\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike-640x853.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to explain how beautiful this walk is. It was so picturesque, so charming, <em>so<\/em> quintessential Swiss Alps that it didn&#8217;t seem real at all. At the end of the trail, we stopped to have a beer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpbolvw.net\/click-8449023-11552045?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2FLauterbrunnen-Hotels-Mountain-Hostel-Gimmelwald.h29866842.Hotel-Information%3Fchkin%3D2021-11-04%26chkout%3D2021-11-05%26x_pwa%3D1%26rfrr%3DHSR%26pwa_ts%3D1634843454023%26referrerUrl%3DaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZXhwZWRpYS5jb20vSG90ZWwtU2VhcmNo%26useRewards%3Dfalse%26rm1%3Da2%26regionId%3D6046756%26destination%3DLauterbrunnen%252C%2BCanton%2Bof%2BBern%252C%2BSwitzerland%26destType%3DMARKET%26selected%3D29866842%26sort%3DRECOMMENDED%26semdtl%3D%26userIntent%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mountain Hostel<\/a>, which is right next to the Gimmelwald cable car, and of course, has an incredible view.<\/p>\n<p>We then took the cable car from Gimmelwald back up to M\u00fcrren and&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">hiked the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/murren-flower-trail?u=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00fcrren Flower Trail,<\/a> a 1.4-mile point-to-point trail that was another easy walk<\/span>. The flower trail is also stunning, offering mesmerizing views of the Alps in every direction.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I especially loved was all of the playgrounds in this area. Switzerland is a very <a href=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/family-travel-destinations-young-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">family-friendly destination<\/a>. I can&#8217;t wait to return with my daughter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56049 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"M\u00fcrren to Gimmelwald Hike\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike-2-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike-2-1-640x853.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Murren-Gimmelwald-hike-2-1-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Day 3: Schynige Platte &#8211; First<\/h2>\n<p>On our third day in Switzerland, we did our longest hike, a 10-mile point-to-point hike from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/faulhornweg-schynige-platte-first?u=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Schynige Platte to First<\/a>. Schynige Platte is a small mountain ridge and a viewpoint in the Bernese Highlands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We took the train from Wengen down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungfrau.ch\/en-gb\/arrival-at-station-car-parks\/wilderswil-railway-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wilderswil Railway Station<\/a> where we changed trains and then headed up the mountain to Schynige Platte. The journey takes about an hour from Wengen but is well worth it. This was by far my favorite hike I have ever done!<\/p>\n<p>The train drops you off at the base of Berghotel Schynige Platte, where you can have breakfast with an incredible view (check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CUQJm3CobR0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram Reel<\/a>). After breakfast, you&#8217;ll head out on the hike, which takes you through meadows and across mountain ranges where you will see: wildflowers, meandering streams, cows grazing, snow-capped mountains, and sparkling blue lakes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56091 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-hiking-switzerland-2.jpg\" alt=\"Schynige Platte Hike, Switzerland\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-hiking-switzerland-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-hiking-switzerland-2-780x1040.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-hiking-switzerland-2-640x853.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-hiking-switzerland-2-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This hike is rated as <strong>hard<\/strong> due to its length, but I found it to be a moderate hike. The elevation gain is approximately 3,200 ft over the course of the hike. Still, the trail itself is not very steep or strenuous, especially compared to the Wengen to M\u00e4nnlichen hike, which was much shorter but also exhausting.<\/p>\n<p>What I love about this trail is that you are in the middle of nowhere, hiking along mountain ranges and it is so surreal and peaceful that it makes you grateful to just be alive. I actually had several very stressful things on my plate during this trip and this hike was like medicine for my soul.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t remember feeling anything but pure gratefulness on this trail. It is much easier to live in the moment when you are out in nature, surrounded by raw natural beauty (at least for me). We set out on an easy hike from M\u00e4nnlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, followed by a descent back to Wengen.<\/p>\n<p>We took the gondola up to the top of&nbsp;M\u00e4nnlichen for this hike and did the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/panorama-trail-mannlichen-to-kleine-scheidegg?u=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Panorama Trail<\/a>, making our way over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungfrau.ch\/en-gb\/kleine-scheidegg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kleine Scheidegg<\/a>, which is a mountain range that has a small railway station, a couple of shops, and a few cute chalets where you can get drinks and food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56032 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/switzerland-hiking-trail-cows.jpg\" alt=\"Switzerland Cows\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/switzerland-hiking-trail-cows.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/switzerland-hiking-trail-cows-780x585.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/switzerland-hiking-trail-cows-853x640.jpg 853w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/switzerland-hiking-trail-cows-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a 5-mile hike&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">rated as&nbsp;<strong>moderate,<\/strong> but it is mostly either flat or downhill, and I would rate it<\/span>&nbsp;easy in my opinion. From Kleine Scheidegg, you can continue on and hike all the way back down the mountain to Wengen, which is a few more miles and a very easy walk on a wide dirt road.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">When you are almost back in Wengen, you can stop for a celebratory beer and food at&nbsp;Bergrestaurant Allmend, which is right along the trail and serves up delicious cheese raclette (a must-have when you are in Switzerland!) along with gorgeous views of Wengen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56099 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-restaurant-allmend.jpg\" alt=\"Wengen Restaurant Allmend, Switzerland\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-restaurant-allmend.jpg 960w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-restaurant-allmend-780x1040.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-restaurant-allmend-640x853.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-restaurant-allmend-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 5: Kandersteg &#8211; Oeschinensee<\/h3>\n<p>On our fifth day in Switzerland, we&nbsp;<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">hiked the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/kandersteg-oeschinensee--3?ref=result-card&amp;u=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kandersteg-Oeschinensee<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/switzerland\/bern\/kandersteg-oeschinensee--3?ref=result-card&amp;u=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&nbsp;Trail<\/a> around Oeschinen Lake.<\/p>\n<p>Oeschinen Lake is about an hour&#8217;s drive from Lauterbrunnen, so we took the train from Wengen down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungfrau.ch\/en-gb\/arrival-at-station-car-parks\/lauterbrunnen-railway-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lauterbrunnen Railway Station<\/a>, then hopped in our rental car for the scenic drive over. At the base of the mountain, you have to take a cable car up to the lake and hiking trails.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Oeschinen Lake is such a beautiful, bright, sparkling blue color that it almost looks fake! The lake is fed by a series of mountain creeks and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, lush trees, and vibrant greenery in every direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This hike is a 4.8-mile,&nbsp;<strong>heavily trafficked<\/strong>&nbsp;loop trail that is accurately rated as&nbsp;<strong>moderate<\/strong>.&nbsp;At the end of the hike, you can stop at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berghotel-oeschinensee.ch\/en\/restaurant-oeschinensee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Berghotel Oeschinen<\/a>, which features a restaurant offering delicious and healthy options, along with a large outdoor patio overlooking the lake.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56102 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-Oeschinen-Lake-Switzerland.jpg\" alt=\"Oeschinen Lake, Switzerland\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-Oeschinen-Lake-Switzerland.jpg 960w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-Oeschinen-Lake-Switzerland-780x1040.jpg 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-Oeschinen-Lake-Switzerland-640x853.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/vanessa-rivers-Oeschinen-Lake-Switzerland-150x200.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Day 6: Rest\/Work Day + Cheese Festival&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>On our sixth day in Wengen, we took a much-needed rest\/work day, caught up on emails, did yoga, and relaxed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wengenapartments.com\/rentals\/apartment-wengen-chalet-bargsunna-penthouse-307759.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">our chalet<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, we met up with Julie, the founder of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wengenapartments.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wengen Apartments,<\/a>&nbsp;and she took us to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/grindelwald.swiss\/en\/summer\/see-and-do\/tradition-culture\/village-experiences\/cheese-festival-wengen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wengen Cheese Festival<\/a>, which is held every September in Wengen.&nbsp;It was a small gathering in the heart of the village and it seemed like all the locals were there.<\/p>\n<p>We ate <em>tons<\/em> of cheese (of course!), drank beer, and listened to a local band play, which was an enjoyable way to spend a relaxing afternoon in the Swiss Alps!<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of cheese, for an amazing, authentic dinner experience in Wengen, try&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Restaurant_Review-g188085-d3924346-Reviews-Waldhuettli-Wengen_Jungfrau_Region_Bernese_Oberland_Canton_of_Bern.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Waldhuttli<\/a> (Forest Hut Wengen). The beginning of September is arguably the best time for a hiking trip in Switzerland, as the weather is still pleasant and most tourists have dispersed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We went on our girls&#8217; wellness and hiking getaway in Wengen during the second week of September. At first, the weather called for rain all week, but we lucked out and mainly got sunny days, and it was actually quite warm. There was one day that it rained while we were staying in Wengen, but we used that as a much-needed rest and workday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-56033 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-annual-weather.png\" alt=\"Wengen, Switzerland Annual Weather\" width=\"1434\" height=\"728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-annual-weather.png 1434w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-annual-weather-780x396.png 780w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/wengen-switzerland-annual-weather-150x76.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1434px) 100vw, 1434px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Traveling Internationally As A Vaccinated American&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>Traveling as a vaccinated American in Europe was actually a great experience. This was my first international trip since the pandemic began, so I have to admit I was pretty nervous leading up to our departure. I was especially anxious about entering Switzerland and re-entering the US, but everything went smoothly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland officially reopened its borders to vaccinated Americans in July 2021, so we planned our hiking trip for September 2021. Leading up to our departure, I was worried that they would reinstate a 10-day quarantine, which would have made our trip impossible; fortunately, this did not happen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you are planning a trip to Switzerland, elsewhere in Europe, or anywhere in the world, be sure to check that the country you want to visit is open to vaccinated travelers from your country and that it does not have a quarantine in place. I have an international plan with T-Mobile and I had at least a few bars almost everywhere we hiked. So even if you are &#8220;out in the middle of nowhere,&#8221; it still feels very safe. Additionally, chalets are located along every hiking trail, providing convenient places to stop and rest, as well as purchase food or drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland is a very safe country. Our little group consisted of just three girls for this trip and there was not one time that I didn&#8217;t feel safe. There was not a single time when I was &#8220;over it&#8221; and wanted to go home. Of course, I missed my four-year-old daughter who was at home with her dad, but I was honestly having the time of my life on this trip, thoroughly enjoying some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, and a part of me wished it would never end.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you&#8217;ve found my Switzerland hiking trip guide helpful and I hope it has inspired you to plan a trip to the Bernese Alps!
