D.C. is definitely among the most important cities in the US, but it always felt more like a place to spend a school field trip than an adult getaway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But a long weekend in the Capital proved to me that Washington D.C. is a lively and lovely town that boasts all the charm of a metropolis at a fraction of the cost. There\u2019s a reason why every political drama and film shows people running in D.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nama\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Mall<\/a> is one of the most beautifully laid out parks and the perfect place to get some exercise while going on a mini-tour of the best sites of the city. You can loop around the mall, monuments, and Tidal Basin for as little or long as you please, running, jogging, or even walking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Tidal Basin is a 1.7-mile loop that will take you past the Jefferson Memorial and the MLK Statue, to name a few highlights. Add a loop around the Constitutional Gardens to get a view of the Lincoln Memorial. If you\u2019re really advantageous, the Rock Creek trail from there will take you right into Georgetown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Grab a quick bite post-run at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emissarydc.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emissary<\/a>, right across from the hotel. They are free, open every day from 10 am &#8211; 5:30 pm except Christmas, and full of incredible treasures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even if you\u2019re not typically a museum person, there is something from you. From dinosaur fossils to the first airplane, to Micheal Jordan\u2019s jersey &#8211; each museum is worth at least a short tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The museums actually have a twenty-minute highlights tour that shows you the most interesting pieces, and there are a dozen to pick from but here are some of my favorites:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38459 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Native-American-Museum.jpg\" alt=\"Smithsonian Museum in National Mall\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Native-American-Museum.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Native-American-Museum-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/museums\/american-history-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smithsonian Museum of American History<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\">The first telephone and lightbulb, Julia Child\u2019s Kitchen, The Batmobile, the Ruby Slippers \u2026the American History Museum are the perfect museums for people who don\u2019t like Museums. Full of thousands of important items throughout history, it almost feels like you\u2019re visiting the most eclectic and interesting garage sale of your life. This is an absolute must.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/museums\/natural-history-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natural History Museum<\/a> <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\">Marvel at the Hope Diamond, turn your face in a Caveman, and wander through the newly renovated Fossil Hall opened in June of 2019 and promises to wow explorers of every age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/museums\/air-and-space-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Air + Space Museum<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\">Pop in to see the Spirit of Adventure, the Wright Brothers flier, rockets that went to the moon and of course, get some astronaut ice cream at the gift shop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">All the museums have cafes inside, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/museums\/american-indian-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Indian Museum<\/a>&nbsp;is known to have some of the best eats on The Mall. There is also a line of food trucks offering quick, cheap bites you can enjoy with a view of the Capitol Building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38457 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Air-Space-Museum-DC.jpg\" alt=\"Airplane in Air and Space Museum\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Air-Space-Museum-DC.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Air-Space-Museum-DC-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">EVENING<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Explore Georgetown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Georgetown is no doubt Washington\u2019s most charming neighborhood. Wander through the cobblestone streets and take in the rich history of the houses on the street &#8211; you can find walking tour books, online guides, or just enjoy the architecture and skip the stories.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-38469\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Georgetown-DC.jpg\" alt=\"A Perfect Weekend Itinerary to Sights &amp; Eats In Washington D.C.\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Georgetown-DC.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Georgetown-DC-774x811.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In addition to boutiques, main street shops, and several cute bakeries are a slew of delicious restaurants to choose from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For a quick and cheap bite head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaiatacos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chaia Tacos<\/a>, a vegetarian farm-to-table concept tucked away by the waterfront. For under $25 you can get a trio of inventive tacos, fresh-made chips and dip, and a glass of rose!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38460 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Georgetown-DC-Buildings.jpg\" alt=\"White building in Georgetown, Washington DC\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Georgetown-DC-Buildings.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Georgetown-DC-Buildings-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If a more fancy meal is calling your name head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.martinstavern.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Martins Tavern<\/a>, a Georgetown iconic spot in its 4th generation of ownership. JFK proposed to Jackie here, every president has dined in one of their booths, and the menu of classic, hearty fare is unchanged. Try their famous oyster stew!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For dessert, head to local-favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/bakedandwired.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baked + Wired<\/a> for DC\u2019s best and biggest cupcakes. The inventive, decadent flavors here blow the nearby famous completion out of the water. Head to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unconventionaldiner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Unconventional Diner<\/a> to start your morning with a brunch you won\u2019t forget. Mile-high blueberry pancakes, biscuit eggs benny, a dirty caesar breakfast salad, and a malted oreo milkshake are just some of the stand out items on this menu!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After breakfast head back to <a href=\"https:\/\/npg.si.edu\/home\/national-portrait-gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Portrait Gallery<\/a>&nbsp;to see the way the President\u2019s took selfies before the iPhone existed. The standout of the gallery is, of course, the latest additions of Michelle and Barak Obama, painted by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kehinde_Wiley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">Kehinde Wiley<\/span><\/a>. Go pay tribute to al the founding fathers in the Hall of Presidents.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">AFTERNOON<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Yesterday you marveled at the past, and today it\u2019s time to reflect on it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/museums\/african-american-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">African American History Museum<\/a><span class=\"s1\">&nbsp;<\/span>is the newest addition to the Mall and is an absolute must to visit. Demand is high, so to visit you must either book ahead several weeks out <a href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/visit\/passes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online<\/a> or join the standby line from 1-3 pm daily outside the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Allow several hours to visit all four floors, taking you from the history of the African Slave Trade all the way to the modern African American culture gallery on the top. You will want to read every single plaque, so start at the bottom and work your way up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38458 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/African-American-Museum-DC.jpg\" alt=\"African American History Museum In Washington D.C.\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/African-American-Museum-DC.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/African-American-Museum-DC-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The cafe inside the museum, Home Sweet Home, has an incredible selection of soul food &#8211; including barbecue, red velvet cake, hush puppies, and gumbo. Plan on having lunch here when you enter to fuel up and explore the galleries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Another museum to not miss is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States Holocaust Memorial Museum<\/a> a little off the mall. This powerful museum will give you an in-depth history of the Holocaust from the beginning to interviews with survivors today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38464 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Lincoln-Monument-DC.jpg\" alt=\"Abraham Lincoln Memorial\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Lincoln-Monument-DC.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Lincoln-Monument-DC-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1536px) 100vw, 1536px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">EVENING<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leave the Mall and head up Pennsylvania Avenue to get to dinner at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearefoundingfarmers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Founding Farmers<\/a>. Think of this place as a more charming local version of the Cheesecake Factory. Absolutely everything on the enormous menu sounds amazing, including their massive desserts. Start with the dips and chips and end with the butter cake and you won\u2019t regret a single calorie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You\u2019re going to need to walk off that meal, so head back to the mall after dark and join the hundreds of people taking in the monuments at night.
