Did you know you could score accommodation for free or as little as AUD$30\/year? Or if you\u2019re giving the digital nomad lifestyle a shot, there\u2019s a way you could stop paying rent indefinitely?<\/p>\n<p>Yep. But what\u2019s the catch? You\u2019ll be house and pet sitting for people in exchange for a place to stay. And I really don\u2019t think that\u2019s going to put anyone out.<\/p>\n<p>I first heard about this whole house sitting business one day at work. This lady was doing long term sits in the city I\u2019m from in Australia. But after a quick Google search, I found out you could do this anywhere in the world. <em>Anywhere<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For a night, or for six months or longer. Websites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=446647&amp;v=5758&amp;q=215273&amp;r=588093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TrustedHousesitters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindmyhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MindMyHouse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housecarers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HouseCarers.com<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housesittersamerica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">House Sitters America<\/a> charge their users between AUD$30 and AUD$140 for an annual membership.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35076\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting.jpg\" alt=\"HOUSE SITTING: HOW TO TRAVEL THE WORLD FOR FREE\" width=\"1272\" height=\"1696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting.jpg 960w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1272px) 100vw, 1272px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>House Sitting And Pet Sitting<\/h2>\n<p>Once you apply to a house sitting website, you can then apply for house sits in your city, state or country, or that place you\u2019ve been longing to go to in Mexico or France. You can look after loft-style apartments, homely homes in the suburbs and cabins on a tonne of land. Or even someone\u2019s mobile home. There are ads where people don\u2019t have pets\u2014they just want their home to look lived in. But most people do have pets.<\/p>\n<p>Cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, fish. And some people have iguanas. Of the 12 house sits I\u2019ve secured since starting out, there was only one sit where the owner didn\u2019t have pets. But just before I arrived, the lady adopted two Siamese kittens from a local rescue in Cincinnati.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35077\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-1.jpg\" alt=\"HOUSE SITTING: HOW TO TRAVEL THE WORLD FOR FREE\" width=\"1247\" height=\"1735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-1.jpg 920w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-1-774x1077.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1247px) 100vw, 1247px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Tips For Starting Out House Sitting<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Upload photos of you with pets. Try to avoid uploading Instagram-style selfies.<\/li>\n<li>List any traits you have that might impress homeowners &#8211; e.g. \u2018I\u2019m organised and reliable\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Talk up any house sitting you\u2019ve done for family or friends.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=446647&amp;v=5758&amp;q=215273&amp;r=588093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TrustedHousesitters<\/a> lets people leave references on your profile. Think character and employment references. Ask your boss, workmates, or friends and family to write a few kind words to help you out.<\/li>\n<li>Similar to a job interview, if there\u2019s something you don\u2019t want the recruiter\u2014or homeowner in this case\u2014to see, make your social media accounts private. I always say I\u2019m happy to link them to my Facebook and Instagram accounts, or LinkedIn profile if that\u2019s what they\u2019d prefer.<\/li>\n<li>Sign up for email notifications. Depending on the site, you\u2019ll either get real-time notifications each time a property is listed against your criteria or most sites send out a daily email with links to the new sits.<\/li>\n<li>Read what\u2019s expected of you during the sit. If it says you have to maintain a garden, ask yourself \u2018Can I look after a garden? Or will I end up killing their plants?\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Look for local sits first. You\u2019ll probably secure a sit or two in your city before you get one in your dream holiday destination. Honestly, I\u2019m not sure. But I\u2019m glad I found out about it. While it\u2019s not a conventional way to get around, it does make for interesting conversation when you meet people in the cities you\u2019re visiting.<\/p>\n<p>And where has housesitting taken me? All over America. My first house sit was in <a href=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/san-francisco-experiences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco<\/a> over the Christmas\u2013New Year breaks in 2017. And I spent last Christmas looking after a mountain sanctuary and the couple\u2019s super affectionate cat in Boulder. I don\u2019t like to think about how much it would have cost to stay in a place like this over the holidays.<\/p>\n<p>In between those two Christmases, I got almost back-to-back sits during a two-month trip over July and August 2018. As a house sitter, you\u2019ll probably be asked to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring in the mail.<\/li>\n<li>Put the rubbish and recycling out each week or fortnight, or however often it\u2019s collected by the city.<\/li>\n<li>Wash any dishes you use.<\/li>\n<li>Feed and clean up after their pet.<\/li>\n<li>Love their pet as if it was your own.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some people might have outlandish chores, but I\u2019m yet to encounter anything too ridiculous. You\u2019d hopefully know about these odd responsibilities before you get there. If there\u2019s something on the ad you don\u2019t want to do, don\u2019t apply.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also good to keep the owners updated on how their pet\u2019s doing or if there are any problems, pet-related or otherwise. Before the sit ends, I like to wash and change the sheets before the owner gets back. This has always earned me bonus points.<\/p>\n<p>And there\u2019s nothing worse than coming home and having to change your sheets. I\u2019ve seen ads where owners are happy for the sitter to use their car, but don\u2019t assume you\u2019ll get one. Because you probably won\u2019t. My Cincinnati sit included a car. This wasn\u2019t something I felt comfortable using, especially when we drive on the opposite side of the road back home.<\/p>\n<p>Other owners have said I was welcome to use their bicycle, but I\u2019m not a bicycle person. Another good idea is to ask about the home\u2019s proximity to public transport. It has saved me tens of thousands of dollars in accommodation costs over a 12-month period. That AUD$140 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awin1.com\/cread.php?s=446647&amp;v=5758&amp;q=215273&amp;r=588093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TrustedHousesitters<\/a> membership fee doesn\u2019t seem so bad now, does it?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve met some great people along the way. I\u2019ve sat for couples younger than me, empty nesters, single professionals, and quite a few artists and mental health professionals. I caught up with one couple from Seattle when I was back sitting for someone else last December, and I\u2019m hoping to catch them again in June.<\/p>\n<p>Not only have I remained in contact with about half of the homeowners, but some of them have helped me carve out a possible new career. They\u2019ve encouraged me to start documenting my house and cat sitting travels. They were so impressed with the photos and footage I captured of their cats, they said I\u2019d be silly not to share my stories online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-35080\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-4.jpg\" alt=\"Spotting a deer while house sitting in front yard\" width=\"1271\" height=\"1695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-4.jpg 960w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/house-sitting-4-774x1032.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1271px) 100vw, 1271px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Other House And Pet Sitting Websites&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>The websites I\u2019ve mentioned are ones I\u2019ve used and got sits through, but there are heaps of other ones out there. Another big one is Nomador. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nomador.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nomador<\/a> seems to be more popular with, and for, Europeans. It also has \u2018Nomador Stopovers\u2019 where travellers making their way from one destination to the next can stay at someone\u2019s place for free. Kind of like couchsurfing, I guess, but only for one night.<\/p>\n<p>Another website focused on pet sitting is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rover.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rover<\/a>. You have to be an American resident or citizen to use Rover, and sitters get paid unlike with many of the house sitting websites. But, hey, I\u2019m not complaining about doing this \u2018work\u2019 without being paid!<\/p>\n<p>There are also country-specific sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.housesitterscanada.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">House Sitters Canada<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aussiehousesitters.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aussie House Sitters<\/a>. If there\u2019s a certain country you\u2019d like to visit, try Googling the country with \u2018house sitting \u2019 and see what comes up. Other people have mentioned finding sits on Facebook groups. I haven\u2019t done this and I\u2019m not sure how I feel about it.
