I&nbsp;remember watching movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail and&nbsp;Braveheart and thinking how&nbsp;breathtaking the landscape was in&nbsp;Scotland, where these movies were&nbsp;filmed.<\/p>\n<p>So when my husband and I began planning our family trip we opted to skip the popular, capital city of Edinburgh, and instead visit the cultural capital of the Scottish Highlands &#8211; Inverness Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Finding The Loch Ness Monster In Iverness, Scotland\" width=\"1100\" height=\"619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yBabeAO4oYc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Inverness is a beautiful, small city with a population of just 70,000, located on Scotland\u2019s northeast coast, where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth inlet of the North Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Its Old Town features cathedrals and churches from the 18th-century, and there are a handful of incredible castles in and around Inverness.<\/p>\n<p>I spent three days and nights here with my husband, baby daughter, and mother-in-law. This area is an amazing mix of culture, history and&nbsp;untamed wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>From majestic mountains to mysterious lochs (lakes) the natural beauty you will find in the Scottish Highlands is unparalleled.<\/p>\n<p>Inverness is located at the foot of the Scottish Highlands and provides the perfect base for exploring this gorgeous region.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to instill a deep appreciation for nature in your children exploring the Scottish Highlands should be on your family bucket list!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33232\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/scottish-highlands-1.jpg\" alt=\"Scottish Highlands\" width=\"1344\" height=\"1008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/scottish-highlands-1.jpg 1344w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/scottish-highlands-1-774x581.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1344px) 100vw, 1344px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>2) RIVER NESS<\/h2>\n<p>The beautiful Ness River runs through the heart of Inverness and provides the perfect backdrop for walking, jogging, riding bikes and exploring along the water&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p>I took my baby girl on daily walks along the river during our stay in Inverness and she loved watching the water and seeing all the birds and animals that emerged by the river.<\/p>\n<p>There are some great affordable hotels located on the Ness River such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/palacemiltonhotel.html?aid=1435586&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Best Western Palace Hotel<\/a>, and also some good AirBNB options close to the river as well.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-26661\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/iverness-scotland-1-774x516.jpg\" alt=\"7 REASONS WHY INVERNESS, SCOTLAND IS A GREAT FAMILY GETAWAY DESTINATION\" width=\"774\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/iverness-scotland-1-774x516.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/iverness-scotland-1-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/iverness-scotland-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>3) LOCH NESS<\/h2>\n<p>Everyone has heard of Nessie the famous Loch Ness monster but not everyone knows that Loch Ness is located in the heart of the Scottish Highlands!<\/p>\n<p>From Inverness, it is a beautiful 50-minute drive to reach Fort Augustus where you will depart for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cruiselochness.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cruise Loch Ness<\/a> tour.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter is only a year old so we decided to do one of the slow-paced cruises, which I highly recommend in order to take in the beauty of Loch Ness, but they also offer high-speed boat excursions which might be more fun for older children.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-26637\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/loch-ness-scotland-2-774x516.jpg\" alt=\"7 REASONS WHY INVERNESS, SCOTLAND IS A GREAT FAMILY GETAWAY DESTINATION\" width=\"774\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/loch-ness-scotland-2-774x516.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/loch-ness-scotland-2-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/loch-ness-scotland-2.jpg 1588w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>4) HIGHLAND WILDLIFE PARK<\/h2>\n<p>Established in 1909, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has been working to promote the awareness and conservation of rare and endangered animals for over 100 years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>RZSS operates Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">I would never want to promote visiting a zoo but if you have kids you will&nbsp;likely want to take them to a zoo at some point so I would suggest&nbsp;instead&nbsp;visiting a Wildlife Park, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highlandwildlifepark.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Highland Wildlife Park<\/a> is the best wildlife park I have seen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">The animals here live on a vast amount of land. Perched on the shore of Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle is one of the most famous and picturesque castles near Inverness.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped here on the way back from our Loch Ness tour to take photos and I was blown away by how beautiful the location of this castle is.<\/p>\n<p>My baby girl and I also explored Inverness Castle which is right in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<p>There is an array of fairytale castles around Inverness such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ballindalloch Castle<\/li>\n<li>Ardverikie Estate<\/li>\n<li>Fort George<\/li>\n<li>Castle Stuart<\/li>\n<li>Dunrobin Castle, and<\/li>\n<li>Cawdor Castle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That you&#8217;ll have a fun time exploring your family getaway!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-26662\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Urquhart-Castle-774x516.jpg\" alt=\"7 REASONS WHY INVERNESS, SCOTLAND IS A GREAT FAMILY GETAWAY DESTINATION\" width=\"774\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Urquhart-Castle-774x516.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Urquhart-Castle-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Urquhart-Castle.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>6) EXCELLENT FAMILY DINING IN INVERNESS<\/h2>\n<p>There are some great restaurants in Inverness that have excellent food, nice atmospheres, and are kid-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>My husband and I love to eat out but it is hard to find good, kid-friendly restaurants, so this was a huge plus!<\/p>\n<p>Two restaurants that I love in Inverness are The Waterside at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/thewatersidehotel.html?aid=1435586&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Waterside Hotel<\/a>, and Contrast Brasserie at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/gb\/glenmoristonhotel.html?aid=1435586&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenmoriston Town House Hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Contrast has better food but Waterside has a more relaxed&nbsp;atmosphere for kids.
