It\u2019s also a good place to start a trip, as Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in neighboring Alajuela is a hub for flights throughout Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p>On the upscale side of things, Escaz\u00fa, virtually a suburb of San Jos\u00e9, is noted for having cosmopolitan amenities. Some of the options are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beachfront hotels offer a textbook tropical vacation with direct access to sand and sea. Pass the Pina coladas, please, and don\u2019t wake me until it\u2019s time to leave.<\/li>\n<li>Ecolodges provide a respite from civilization where you can wake up in a rainforest jungle, on a coffee plantation, or even in a treehouse. There are also facilities that offer eco-camping as well as glamping. You\u2019re on your own for the whole story, but the cheat sheet version is that Costa Rica\u2019s indigenous people came under Spanish rule in the 16th century and remained a Spanish colony until several changes of government led to its independence in 1847. Since then, and with uninterrupted democracy since 1949 (when it also abolished its army), it has remained one of the most stable, peaceful, and progressive nations in Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>Renowned for its ecotourism, the country is the only one to meet all of the United Nations\u2019 criteria for environmental sustainability and is among the greenest countries in the world. Women will always seem to be easier targets for criminals, even if they\u2019re not, and machismo is persistent in this part of the world. Basically, pack your common sense along with your bathing suit.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the usual cautions to remain aware of your surroundings, don\u2019t walk alone after dark, and stay alert to the possibility of pickpockets and the others who make a practice of preying on tourists the world over, these are things to note particularly when visiting Costa Rica:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t show a lot of skin. Unless you\u2019re on the beach, it\u2019s wiser to cover up and not dress provocatively. We all know what should be, but a firm grasp of reality is what will keep you safer. In rural areas, dressing modestly is also a sign of respect for the culture.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t react to catcalls. Local men may be quite vocal about their appreciation of your female form, but regardless of what your immediate reaction is, keep your eyes straight ahead and keep walking.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t sit alone at a bar. And don\u2019t flirt with the locals.
