Every person should plan a trip to witness this spectacle at least once in their lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A couple of years ago I went on a trip to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. On one of the most memorable nights of my life so far, I watched on in complete awe as a bright green ribbon of light illuminated the sky above me; meandering, twisting and turning in motions as elegant as a ballerina, expanding for miles as far as the eye could see. It\u2019s all very scientific, but the basic explanation is that they are made by collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth&#8217;s atmosphere. The colours are dependent on the type of gas particles; the most common colour is green but they have been seen in a multitude of colours including yellow, pink, blue and violet. If you\u2019re super lucky, you\u2019ll catch them in their rarest colour: red.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">WHERE CAN YOU SEE THEM?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Northern Lights are most commonly found in cold, Arctic regions, near to the magnetic pole of the northern hemisphere (you can see the lights of the aurora in the south too, known as the \u2018Aurora Australis\u2019). Book a trip north to places like Canada, Alaska, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Greenland or Iceland to see them. I saw them in Iceland and I can\u2019t recommend it enough \u2013 as well as getting to see the Lights you get to explore a really cool city, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You can witness the Northern Lights on a relatively low budget. Sites like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscanner.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SkyScanner<\/a> offer pretty cheap flights to Iceland, or you can find good package deals on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easyjet.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Easyjet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-blue-northern-lights-774x471.jpg\" alt=\"HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND blue northern lights\" width=\"774\" height=\"471\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-blue-northern-lights-774x471.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-blue-northern-lights-120x73.jpg 120w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-blue-northern-lights-500x304.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-blue-northern-lights-1080x657.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-blue-northern-lights.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There are a few places near to the capital, Reykjavik, where you can see the Northern Lights:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Grotta Lighthouse<\/strong>\u00a0A scenic sea-side spot within the vicinity of Reykjavik where there\u2019s a lighthouse. You can park your car here and sit inside all warm and wait for the lights to appear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Thingvellir National Park<\/strong> The darkness out here makes for a good viewing platform, but the roads all the way out are very icy so you need to take care if you\u2019re driving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Outside Reykjavik<\/strong> One night we took the main road out of Reykjavik and drove for about 30 minutes until there was complete darkness and then pulled over on the side of the road to watch them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NorthernLightsIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-774x517.jpg\" alt=\"NorthernLightsIceland HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND\" width=\"774\" height=\"517\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NorthernLightsIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-774x517.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NorthernLightsIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NorthernLightsIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NorthernLightsIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-1080x721.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NorthernLightsIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND.jpg 1452w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">WHEN CAN YOU SEE THEM?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">To see the Northern Lights in all of their glory you need complete and utter darkness. In summer in Iceland it is light pretty much all day, every day, and at summers absolute peak daylight still lingers in the darkest hours, which is not ideal. In stark contrast, mid-winter in Iceland only sees about 4-5 hours of daylight per day and the other 20 hours are shrouded in darkness \u2013 an ideal breeding-ground for the Northern Lights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There\u2019s no guarantee that the Northern Lights will be there when you go, but the best chances in Iceland are between the months of September-April. Plan your trip in the winter when the nights are at their longest for the best chances of seeing the Lights. I went to see them in December and they were on display nearly every night!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">WHAT ARE THE BEST WEATHER CONDITIONS?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">Clear skies with little-to-no cloud cover are ideal. The Lights occur very high up in the atmosphere and if there are clouds they\u2019re going to be in the way \u2013 so freezing cold, calm and starry nights are just about perfect. The weather is completely unpredictable, but you can up your chances by following the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.vedur.is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Iceland weather<\/a> online.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VolcanicIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-774x516.jpg\" alt=\"VolcanicIceland HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND\" width=\"774\" height=\"516\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17850\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VolcanicIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-774x516.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VolcanicIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VolcanicIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/VolcanicIceland-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND.jpg 1033w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you love independent adventure then my first suggestion is to rent a car to try to find the lights yourself. You\u2019ll have to rent a decent car because you\u2019ll be driving away from the city where there\u2019s light and into complete darkness where the roads are likely to be covered in snow and ice. You can rent a car from right next to the airport in Iceland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Option 2 is to book onto a tour bus. We decided to go with a bus tour and for roughly \u00a350 I booked the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.re.is\/day-tours\/northern-lights-tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reykjavik Excursions<\/a>. The benefit of a tour bus is their excellent communication so you\u2019re much more likely to see the Lights. Another great advantage of many of the bus tours in Iceland is that if you don\u2019t see the Northern Lights on your first trip, you can keep going for free until you see them (or until you have to fly home)!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/aurora-borealis-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-774x516.jpg\" alt=\"aurora-borealis HOW TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND\" width=\"774\" height=\"516\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17855\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/aurora-borealis-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-774x516.jpg 774w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/aurora-borealis-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-120x80.jpg 120w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/aurora-borealis-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/aurora-borealis-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND-1080x720.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/wearetravelgirls.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/aurora-borealis-HOW-TO-SEE-THE-NORTHERN-LIGHTS-IN-ICELAND.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">NORTHERN LIGHTS TIPS:<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>TAKE YOUR CAMERA\u00a0<\/strong>Taking your camera to get a few snaps of the Northern Lights is a must \u2013 but make sure you don\u2019t spend all of your time viewing them behind the lens. If you only get one opportunity to see them then make sure it\u2019s with your own eyes, the performance is really something you just can\u2019t miss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Unless you have a ridiculously steady hand then you\u2019ll probably need a tripod too, it\u2019ll be very dark out there and you\u2019ll get a lot of camera shake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>WRAP UP WARM<\/strong> I can\u2019t stress enough just how cold it will be, especially when you\u2019re stood outside gazing at the rippling display of colour. You don\u2019t want to have to hop back on the bus and miss any of the action because you\u2019re too cold, so be sure to take your coat, scarf, hat, gloves, hand warmers, blanket, quilt, fireplace&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>TAKE SUPPLIES<\/strong> You could find yourself driving around for a few hours in search of the Northern Lights. Stock up on road-trip essentials like water, a flask full of hot tea, coffee or hot chocolate, and enough snacks to stop you getting too hungry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">We can\u2019t control nature and there\u2019s no guarantee that you\u2019ll see the Northern Lights, but you can increase your chances by going to the right place, at the right time of year. You need clear skies, good solar activity and a lot of luck, but if you find yourself reading this post and wandering about whether to kick that itch and witness this unreal, spectacular display, then I URGE you to do it. Go on and book those flights.
